Pet Shop Boys, "West End Girls '85"

In 1984, the Pet Shop Boys' "West End Girls" was popular in west coast clubs. And then, 35 years ago, they (re)released it to the public at-large. "West End Girls" had its roots in hip hop, and I don't recall where we read that Neil Tennant said he wanted to emulate Debbie Harry's rap, on "Rapture." Anyway, PSB's "West End Girls" has become a synthpop classic.

Its mood perfectly fit the cool and rainy Fall '85 semester in the SF Bay Area. As a high school freshman, I had to take MUNI Metro (Sorry, I never took photos back then. All I have is this more modern shot of the L-Taraval, whose destination is the SF Zoo), as part of my cross-city commute. There was no radio reception in the underground tube. So when the outbound trains emerged at West Portal station, it was quite a trip, to get radio reception, and hear "West End Girls."

When a stereo system accurately reproduces "West End Girls," for a brief moment, we're back on that cross-city early-morning commute. If it rained out at West Portal, we got excited. However, that did make for a treacherous long walk, once we got off the trains, and had to walk to campus. And you know what? Because it never rains any more, we sorely miss those rains, even if they made us bring an extra set of clothing (or, you embarrassingly had to wear your PE uniform all day!).
