Obituary, "Memories Remain"

Sometime during late 1990 or early 1991, my friend Shelly took a few of us to see death metal band Obituary, at The Omni in Oakland. This venue was in a sketchy neighborhood, buttressed against Highway 24. Shattuck and Telegraph Streets split at a sharp angle. Nearby were a Kasper's hotdog stand and Hooper's Candies. Maybe it was at or after Halloween, but the other girl dyed her hair. In 1990, we didn't know much about hair dye.

Shelly, the guys, and I had previously been to The Omni several times. The other girl thought it was interesting, that the men's restroom, instead of individual urinals, simply had a trough.

Anyway, Obituary were touring in support of their breakthrough album, Cause Of Death . Live, they sounded nowhere near as jagged, thin, disjointed, and raw, as on record. You couldn't really make out John Tardy's words, but "Memories Remain" stood out. Indeed, 30 years later, you can't forget the memories, and some of the images remain vivid.

We do not have any ticket stubs, shirts, or photos from the 90/91 show. The closest we have is this stub from when we next saw Obituary, 8/29/92, also at The Omni. Only $13.50, including ticket tax! On this date, I think only Shelly and Todd were of legal drinking age. But both had to drive so they, like the rest of us, got soft drinks.
