Poison, "Ride The Wind"

Here in mid-latitude California, October 1990 brought our first "rain," amounting to less than 0.25", but it was enough to clear the air, and wind down the fire season. Poison's "Ride The Wind" inspired you to, well, ah, um, pretend to ride a motorcycle or fly a plane. And as always, even if we didn't make any plans, we loved hitting the coasts. Notice our dirty butts; we did not bring any mats or beach towels, so we sat on the ground.

But the reality was, we were teenagers, barely able to drive legally. More times than not, our families gave us a little subcompact, often 2-door hatchback. Insurance on such vehicles was relatively affordable, and our parents didn't care if these cars got dirty or beat up. They had decent fuel economy, and were easy to park. Even in the Bay Area, gas was less than $2/gallon. So with these subcompact cars, we could go places !

With Poison's "Ride The Wind" playing, you and the three girls were "riding Harley's" down to SoCal. Nah, even with the girl flooring it, the car was not going fast. The subcompact car, by being a noisy ride, faked being a Harley. In those days, the windows were larger. So while the sun, even if the outside air was cold, made you hot, those cars offered a much wider view, than today's.

The driver always warned you, if she was approaching a speed bump. Even on smooth roads, the backseat was a cramped and bumpy ride. If you initially did not like the girl with you in the backseat, watch out! After all that jostling, well, that was one way to get married!

The reality was, Poison's Flesh And Blood came out in June 1990. "Ride The Wind' would have been the perfect summer anthem. Alas, "Ride The Wind" was not released until early 1991, when alt-rock had taken over. Thus, "Ride The Wind" was not as popular as it should have been, or deserved to be.
