Testament, "Souls Of Black"

Here's where it all fell apart, for the East Bay's Testament. In late 1989, they had built up considerable momentum, with Practice What You Preach . But in order to catch the wave of 1990, their record label pressured them to come out with a new album, and go on tour.

Big mistake. Souls Of Black was rushed, sounded sloppy, and disappointed. Certainly, the potential was there. Maybe they should have taken another half-year, to develop the ideas, work out the kinks, and come up with the album they were truly capable of.

If you get the album on SHM-CD, yes, the medium is cleaner and more open. But this just reveals what a hurried and muddled mess the music and recording were/are. You listen, look back, and think that, this could have been so much more...
