RE: "Sheela-Na-Gig"

Were it not for PJ Haravey's Dry , I doubt we would ever learn what a sheela-na-gig was.

During that 1992/93 school year, I lived in a 6-unit apartment. The other 5 units were all girls, some of whom I had previously known, and were semi-decent friends with. Because my place had some high-end audio products, my neighbors always invited themselves over. Due to space constraints, hardly anyone had a turntable and records. The girls had Dry on CD, and I do not recall any demos. Wow, sampling some of the demos online, I find them even more organic, raw, and real .

After move-in, you could feel the usual optimism in the air. But when some of the girls came over, one was being rational and realistic, when she said that (she didn't have a boyfriend at the moment), a reasonable, though disappointing, forecast was that she'd get laid no more than twice that quarter. And then there were the myriad suitors she just didn't like, so PJ Harvey's "You leave me dry" was appropriate, and a common refrain.
