Johnny Hates Jazz, "No Mistakes"

In April 1988, I was a high school junior. One of my older friends, Shelly, who provided lots of new music, was about to take her driver's test. Instead of taking it at the San Francisco DMV, located in the Panhandle, where you can't even get out of the lot, Shelly took it in Daly City.

Her oldest brother took her, and reminded her that the beat-up subcompact couldn't really go anywhere, so she was pretty much forced to "Drive like a grandma."

She passed, and afterward, we went in several cars to Serramonte, to celebrate with Shelly. We could not escape Johnny Hates Jazz's "Shattered Dreams." That was from the excellent Turn Back The Clock , but later that year, lead singer Clark Datchler left the band, and they never regained momentum or widespread popularity.

Decades later, Datchler re-joined JHJ, which culminated in the mature and very good album, Magnetized . Somewhat surprisingly, JHJ have a new 9-song EP, Wide Awake . Perhaps my favorite is "No Mistakes."

Unlike most modern-day issues, Wide Awake 's sonics are good, and the CD is not compressed.
