In September 1985, as a new freshman, I went to my very first high school dance. I was not tipped-off or prepared, for just how large these events were. Typically, the rap/R&B DJ manned the gym, while the "modern rock" DJ spun in our outdoor courtyard (above). Our dances were so popular, kids from other high schools attended.
Being older, most audiophiles missed out on mid-to-late 80s high school dances. Thus, these guys are angry, that they missed out on the music. These dances were where we learned about acts like New Order. New Order's "The Perfect Kiss" was around 10 minutes long, so attendees had plenty of time to meander into the middle of the courtyard, and "dance."
Now, in 1985, none of us had heard about the Compact Disc. So when we asked the DJ what he was playing, we saw 12" vinyl singles. Fortunately, a couple years later, New Order would release their 12" mixes (which were damn near impossible to find) on the double-CD, Substance .
But again, the reason why many Stereotypical Audiophiles missed out on all this "underground" music was that they were long out of high school, when the music came out. This music had quite a different impact, if you happened to be a high school student at the time.
