When we graduated from middle school in June 1985, the majority then went across the street, to Washington High School. The rest of us attended the academic school, Lowell.
Initially, my friends who went to Wash were the ones who introduced me to new rock music. And think about it; in 1985, none of us had heard about the compact disc. Neither did any of the record stores have CDs. So we knew that cassettes had the more muffled (especially when you engaged Dolby) sound, but offered portability. So at school or other kids' homes, you exchanged cassettes.
This was how I was introduced to Savatage. Produced by Max Norman, their 1985 album, Power Of The Night , ended with a power ballad, "In The Dream." Looking back, you can kind of see how and why, after "In The Dream," Savatage went on to become a progressive, Broadway rock outfit.
When you play "In The Dream" for audiophiles, they almost always draw a blank stare. But that's how they get into this type of music. Don't feel bad; Power Of The Night was not originally popular, so it's not like plenty of people know about it.
