When it comes to the British new wave act, ABC, people overlook 1985's "Vanity Kills." S'not our fault; back in the day, MTV played the video just a handful of times. The song got very little radio airplay. Smart DJs played it at dances, but if you were not in high school or college, you missed out.
If you get "Vanity Kills" on vinyl, watch out for upper midrange grain. You feel like something is clawing your ears. Also, some pressings have a squid-like "grip" on rhythms. Moreover, early CD pressings of How To Be A...Zillionaire! have that typical thin sound.
But every now and then, you come across media, which aren't plagued by distortion. When you find these, it turns out that "Vanity Kills" is actually a tight, punchy, infectious recording.
