Here I am at six o'clock in the morning
30 years ago, the stereotype was that college kids had a difficult time getting up for 8:00a classes. That certainly was the case at my UC Santa Cruz, whose mornings could be nippy. You just wanted to stay in bed.
However, the Fall 1990 quarter kicked off with Alias' "More Than Words Can Say." You see, after the band Sheriff broke up, their "When I'm With You" became a major hit. Sheriff's lead singer and guitarist had formed Alias, with founding members of Heart. Due to the success of "When I'm With You," Alias had to come up with another power ballad. And their "More Than Words Can Say" not only kicked off the school year, it caused everyone to fall in love.
After hearing "More Than Words Can Say," my dorm neighbor, Rhea, reinforced her love of waking up early. You see, she was from the warmer and drier 626. For her, Santa Cruz's foggy and cool mornings were refreshing and reinvigorating. For you and the rest of the dorm, the only reason you'd be up at 6:00a was to pee.
Rhea explained that, being up at 6:00a meant she was the first to use the restroom, and avoided the rush. She could pee and brush teeth, while waiting for the shower water to heat up. And because she was the first, she never ran out of hot water. While everyone was scrambling and jamming to use the restroom, Rhea could relax, eat breakfast, and get to class on time.
Even if Rhea did not have 8:00a class, she still was up at 6:00a. In the cool morning air, she could avoid the midday heat. She would often drag my ass out, and go swimming or to the open gym. Getting dirty that early in the morning was fine; you could shower at the gym. Or, by the time you got back to the dorm, the pre-8:00a rush was over, and the restrooms weren't crowded.
When we got married, my wife (no, not Rhea) insisted that Alias' "More Than Words Can Say" be played at the banquet. That was a major hit, with our guests. Only my single/divorced audiophile friends do not like it, but that's only 'cuz they don't have someone to fall in love with.
