Kraftwerk was essential...

Absolutely essential to me. Let me elucidate a little. In college a friend of mine played Autobahn for me and I was unimpressed. A few years later, a college DJ on the university station was one of my favorites and he usually played stuff like ECM jazz. He said this is not my normal music to play but just listen. It was Showroom Dummies from Trans Europe Express. I bought the album the next day.

Jump to the Kraftwerk fans at the Absolute Sound, who established Kraftwerk as audiophile quality...and over the years I have listened to them on some ridiculously great systems.

In a whole other direction, Planet Rock from Africa Bambaata more or less started hip hop and the Kraftwerk sample took me right along. I liked it then and kept liking it. Similarly, the vast fields of techno and jungle and the multiple other varieties of electronic dance music were never off-putting or difficult for me to love...these are all children and grandchildren of Kraftwerk.

Essential to me and to many others...RIP Florian...makes me sad.
