Desert Trip report

All in all, an incredible experience. Dylan was in pretty good (for him) voice and he put aside his usual see if you can guess what song I'm singing now schtick for reasonably straightforward versions of his classic songs. The Stones followed with an outstanding show-Keith was a little sloppy at times, but given that he's treated his body like a tent most of his of life it's a miracle that he was up there at all. You got pretty much every big hit. Day 2 started with Neil Young, and he was simply incredible-everyone I talked to was blown away. He led off with 4 acoustic classics (After the Gold Rush, Heart of Gold, Old Man and Long May You Run) and then introduced his band, Promise of the Real. Other than on record, I never got to hear Crazy Horse play live but it's difficult to imagine them being better than this band. The highlight was an 18 minute version of Cowgirl in the Sand-might be the best guitar jam I've ever witnessed, Neil played like a man possessed. The guy next to leaned over and said "I feel sorry for Paul McCartney having to follow this". Everyone we talked to at the break was blown away by Neil's set. Sir Paul did essentially the same set I heard at the Dodger Stadium concert last year, but it was great fun and his vocals were surprisingly good given the dry (and often windy) desert air. Neil joined him on stage for a killer version of A Day in the Life (with Neil doing John's part) and followed with Why Don't We Do It in the Road and Give Peace a Chance. The Who kicked off day 3 with an intense, emotional performance that Pete announced as the final stop of the Who Hits 50 tour-I definitely had the feeling that this could be the last Who show. After the break, the grand finale with Roger Waters. The surround sound and visuals were more astounding than anything I've ever seen and heard in a live show-he began with Speak to Me/Breathe from Dark Side and included pretty much every classic Floyd Track. For the tracks from Animals (Dogs and Pigs-Three Different Ones) they had an amazing backdrop for the Battersea power station, including 4 smoke stacks and a pig floating above the stage. The band had a female vocal duo, Lucius, that were amazing, particularly on Great Gig in the Sky.

Can't say enough good things about the amenities and the friendly staff-they trucked in portable bathrooms with sinks and flush toilets that wouldn't look out of place in a Hilton Garden Inn, the food was great, refillable water stations as well as cell charging stations were everywhere, there was a great craft brew stand, and really comfortable, cushioned folding chairs The photography exhibition was outstanding. A memorable 4 days for us (we started the trip with Van Morrison and Tom Jones at the Hollywood Bowl last Thursday, which was another outstanding concert).
