when the FM band was sort of non-commercial and some stations started to play rock music on FM - "underground" it was called- and with the freedom they had, they played long songs often. And on the one in my home town, I heard Sister Ray.And I knew I had to have it. Records were a big expense to a kid, but yes, I got White Heat White LIght. And then, a bit later I got Velvet Underground and Nico, original banana cover, which to this day remains unpeeled.
Most of the music of those days I am happy to never hear again. But those two albums still sustain me.
In the 70s, I saw Lou Reed's Rock and Roll Animal tour. It wasn't the Velvet Underground, but it was good for me at the time.
I guess one of my favorites is his album with John Cale, Song for Drella. It is an affectionate look back at Warhol after his death, and it is quite emotional.
I didn't quite get Metal Machine Music, but I bought it anyway and I'm glad he did it. What other rock star would do that kind of thing?
