i read HP drummer jerry shirley's book (the best seat in the house) last year. jerry's take on it is that HP was originally intended to be frampton's band. his pal steve marriott encouraged him to leave the hard and start a band, helped him put a great band together, then joined the band, then sort of took over the band. frampton found himself in a band he could not control and that was not allowing him the full expression he wanted, albeit a great band, and moved on to a solo career.
to me both frampton and marriott worked best in settings where they have a strong creative foil. whatever clempson's merits as a guitarist, he clearly was not going to challenge steve on vocals, songwriting or selection or leadership. steve had ideas like making the background singers the blackberries full members of the band. not good ideas in the long run.
once frampton left it became steve's band, and when drugs and ego took more of a role in his life the band sufferred from the impact.
