It started about 20 years ago for me-I knew the big hits from his top 40 heyday, but little else. Then a buddy played the Shadows album for me, and I was hooked. I now have everything he ever recorded.
Shadows is still a favorite, and if you have a turntable it sounds wonderful on vinyl. If You Can Read My Mind, Don Quixote, Sundown, Old Dan's Records and Summer Side of Life are all desert island discs for me. There's a great 2 CD comp that has all of his early United Artists studio material-Sunday Concert from this era is also excellent. I'm also very fond of Waiting For You, and unjustly neglected masterpiece (out of print, but well worth seeking out). I understand Lightfoot was so disappointed in the sales of this album he stayed away from the recording studio for years.
The Songbook box is a good buy-the unreleased tracks are of such high quality I'm amazed they stayed in the vaults for so long.
The great flatpicker Tony Rice is a huge Lightfoot fan and covered his songs often-these tracks are collected on Tony Rice sings Gordon Lightfoot on Rounder, terrific bluegrassy covers and excellent sound, I recommend this one highly.
His only real misfire for me is the David Foster produced East of Midnight-Foster's style and Lightfoot were a horrible match.
