saw the Zombies last night

My son (through a friend of his who plays guitar) called me into his room a few months ago and said "dad, you've got to hear this Zombies album, , Odyssey and Oracle, I think you'd really like it". I sit down and listen to the first few tracks and ask myself how on earth these great songs have eluded me all these years? In the next few weeks I listened it again and again, and was thrilled to find a brand new, beautifully mastered 180 gram vinyl reissue a few weeks ago at my favorite local vinyl haunt.

Fast forward to last night-my son, his friend, wifey and I pile into the car for the drive up to San Juan Capistrano to see the Zombies with Strawbs doing a terrific, albeit short, set (my wife loves the Strawbs and played their records to death when she was in college). Colin Blunstone sounds absolutely fantastic, as does Rod Argent, and we got to hear 5 songs from O&O and lots of other Zombies classics, with Argent's classic rock anthem Hold Your Head Up thrown in for good measure, along with a killer cover of What Becomes of a Broken Heart. Easily one of the best concerts I've ever attended, made even more memorable by sharing it with family.

The opening act was good, too-a band called Scarlet Furies, kind of a folk/country/rock hybrid, fronted by an excellent female lead vocalist.

Sadly, the last U.S. show for now, but they are headed north-Canadian inmates shouldn't miss it if they play near you.
