I've been "into" open reel playback since the mid 1970's when I bought my first, an Ampex 300 from an old local AM radio station.Sourcing production and/or safety master reels is nearly impossible. Friends in the Industry helped me. Like the friend who used to work for Fantasy Records who was told to take the majority of the Contemporary Record reels to the dumpster after they archived to digital media. Another friend worked for CBS (Cheapest Brand Sold) Records, similar story, after they had archived to digital storage.
So really, no, it's not easy. Coming up with production master reels like this is extremely difficult, and why I'm so jonesed about finding Disreali Gears in great condition. It's the find of a lifetime! Basically, those who had either worked for the major labels, or those who were into "dumpster diving" during that era have the reels. That was years back, so you just pray that they had properly stored them, etc. Sometimes it feels like a crapshoot. Sigh, ...
I haven't purchased the Tape Project reels, but have heard one or two. The music is on that old tape, all they have to do is produce a decent copy. So they offer another option, ...
