She's still got it. I dig Madeleine Peyroux a lot, but some might say she's just a copy of Billie Holiday. I might think they should get the rocks out of their ears, because while that's not entirely untrue, she's interesting, a lot more so than you'd think of a singer who could legtimately be characterized as a Billie Holiday clone--even if it's in a good way, which it is.

My wife is very fond of Jane Monheit, and I like her too, but there's just too much filler since her first album, and I hear a lot more 'standards' sorta feel than anyone really injecting emotion. Which is the opposite of what I used to think of k.d. lang, but that was a long time ago.

I like Lucinda, just don't know that she's the right answer for this question. Margo Timmins might be a contender, as well. I also like the girl from Portishead--Beth Gibbons? And there's one damn great Cardigans album, but it's from 10 years ago, & I'm not sure emotion is the right way to describe the vocals on those beautiful pop songs & Black Sabbath covers.

As useless as I find her music, a listen to the first Alanis Morrissette album gives you someone who's emoting, almost to a fault. Give me Exene any day over her, not that what they do is similar.

Also not necessarily emotive, but certainly worthy of a mention, is the Petra Haden album where she sings the entire "The Who Sells Out" acapella; and a great Innocence Mission album last year with some very good, very inspired covers. And I've heard some good moments from Jill Sobule, Juliana Hatfield, Sam Phillips, Eleni Mandell, and especially Keren Ann. Also a big thumbs up to the Ditty Bops, though, again, it's not a question of emotion as they're more in the vein of the Roches if they were into swing jazz.
