thetubeguy1954,
You write:
a) Why don't these sonic differences show up in typical LCR measurements?
b) What are the reasons why wires have unique sonic characteristics?
-These are good questions. As I'm electronically challenged as well, I can't intelligently address the issues of material, stranding, core, covering, capacitance, inductance, and so on that must affect the sound.
The reason audio wires sound different has many contributing affects, but of generally, we must be talking about the way in which a signal is modified passing through a material affecting the harmonic structure.
My experience analyzing the effects of wire on sound is mostly with harpsichords and clavichords. If you know the early keyboard world, you'll know that scholars have been arguing the composition and gauges of wires for the last 50+ years- before there was such a thing as audiophile wires. Only tuning- (temperament) and plectra have so much ongoing debate.
In the early 70's, I tried some experiments running signals made by harpsichord wires through a Fourier Transform analyzer- that for some reason was connected to a plasma containment vessel. This analyzer breaks the complex wave into the component waves showing each frequency and it's amplitude. The results did show subtle differences and I attributed this to mechanical affects- the density and flexibility of the material. I'm wondering if this method could be applied to audio wires and produce actual measured differences?
Wires making a difference: I recently changed my speaker cables to Audioquest Rocket 88 with the DBS system and this was one of the best single upgrades to my system I can recall- on the par with the best tube choices. The NRG-2 power cord also saved the dry-sounding Cambridge Audio 640C from being changed for a Rega Apollo or Rotel 1072 also,..
