Thank for your considered and insightful response.
Your points concerning the threshold of perceptibility is central to the idea.
I like your concept, "If the systems engineering and product implementation and production and procurement are adequate variations between instances should be forced below your threshold of perception, thus things can sound the same and be consistent despite the fact that at some level they actually vary. It's all a matter of tolerance..."
This is all correct and we return to the idea of establishing a tolerance. And, in my view, that is a personal aesthetic that is accepting of the inevitability of the distortion of reproduced sound (subjectivity) and applying this to discovering the technology that makes the preferred distortion (subjectivity and objectivity)
By the way, your example of the two doors is not analogous, as the distance from the floor can affect the performance- doors are cut to accommodate different flooring. so the doors being 1/32" different might make them function noticeably differently. The bathroom door is likely to function over tile and the study over carpeting. While I understand it seems to be niggling to say, I maintain that, logically, that any two objects can not be identical or exactly repeat their function and this has to do with having to consider the functional environments of the systems.
The problem with comparing complex systems is that it's complex.
