Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

All of these items have made noticeable differences, plus another two,..

Dr. Philosophy,

1. Power cords: Yes, my only I replaced the stock power cord on a Cambridge Audio 640C CD player with an Audioquest NRG-2 and was not expecting the degree of improvement all through- quieter, more dynamic, less dry. This power cord more or less saved the 640C from being sold!

2. Interconnects: Remarkable differences! After using a variety of AQ and ARC interconnects for a few years, I was amazed too to hear the degree of change when using Audioquest King Cobras. These also had a noticeable change as they burned in from new, and that they appear to need about 45 minutes warming up. This warming up process prompts me to consider an AQ DBS- powered model especially from phono to preamp.

3. Wire (as in: silver vs. copper internal wiring): I haven't experimented so I'm not sure to what degree they affect sound

4. Speaker wire/cables: Yes, every speaker cable I've tried is different. I used lamp cord for a week with CA 640C > Audio Research LS3 > ARC D130> Infinity Primus 360 Speakers, then changed to Home Depot 14 gauge extension cord for a year, then Audioquest Type 4 the last two years and there was an improvement in each step. The Kimber 4TC I use in my main system was a very noticeable improvement after the heavy 4 strand Audioquests I used from 1985 to 1996

5. Power amplifiers: Yes! And with solid state sounding better and better vis a vis tubes

6. Line level preamps: Yes! I still think of the preamp as the centre- heart and personality of a system

7. Phono pre amps: Yes! Same comments as for above.

Two items not on your list that I've found of significant importance:

8. Tubes: I've found some of the most noticeable changes to my main system- Oracle III/SME V / McIntosh MR67 > Audio Research SP10 > D115 > Vandersteeen 2C and to a tube microphone preamp (Peavey VMP-2, 6-12AX7, 2-12AT7) have been the selection of NOS tubes. The change of the 2-12AT7's in the VMP-2 alone completely transforms the sound.

9. Room: I've done too little over the years to adjustments of the various rooms, but what little I've tried has made very important changes.

I was skeptically resistant a long while to the idea of the various wires being so noticeably different, and tentatively bought used at first, but there were undeniable changes.

Over time, I come to the view that the greatest differences seem to derive from the sources: I had unexpectedly good sound while test driving a Revox B160 tuner (solid state, $1000, 1988)into a $150 Sony 100W receiver!

Cheers,

Bambi B
