Answering questions...

I asked you how you distinguish between DIY and tweaking, and you seem to miss the importance of the question. When you or I build something, I expect we add subtle improvements just because we want the best performance possible. We are not building something to meet a predetermined, rigid, industrial clock or cost constraint. We may not even think about the improvements we add as separate tweaks, but that is what they are.

This is important because you started this subthread with the same insulting tone that is used by the so-called objectivists, and included 'tweaks' in your derision. In my opinion, it is hypocritical of you to deride tweaks while using DIY speakers. How can you honestly say you did not use any subtle improvements over whatever standard production technology would be used to make commercial speakers with the same cabinet form and drivers?

You use the word 'tweaks' for what I would call humbugs. There are humbugs in every area of human activity, not just audio. Humbugs hijack the internal logic of an activity the same way a virus hijacks the mechanisms of cell function, or a computer virus hijacks an operating system. The result is the same: disease and destruction. Audio humbugs distract attention from the real weaknesses of audio equipment. They give comfort to ignorant cynics. They are to be deplored, but they cannot be disproved.

You may have good professional reasons to avoid tweaks in any setup you would use to review new equipment, but that does not justify insulting people who seek to achieve better performance. After all, anyone who spends any more than US$10 for a used boom-box from a thrift store is seeking better performance. There would be no use for equipment reviews if no one wanted better performance.
