Robert,Of course there's nothing wrong with having a preference. My problem with Kristian's post is he's previously stated he knows measurements & specs don't tell the whole story! Yet now he's attacking my system ---{ which in and of itself doesn't bother me at all }--- as:
1) So radically altering the sound of the recording before it even reaches my room.
2) My system is a great, big tonecontrol that alters the sound of the signal in many ways.So as Kristian's probably and most likely, given the limited number of dealers, never heard a Mastersound Reference 845, a pair of CarderSound Madisons, or the specific combination of a Mastersound Reference 845 and CarderSound Madisons, what can Kristian be basing his opinion on other than measurements & specs or just his "belief" that all triodes are tonecontrols & all single fullrange drivers are peaky'n'-truncated-FR-whizzercone-speakers? IMHO for anyone to judge the sound of an audio system they've never heard is ignorant behavior, no?
By the way even as an owner of a Mastersound Reference 845 the only specs I've been able to obtain are these:
Reference 845
Parallel Single Ended in class “Aâ€
Power: 2 x 40 Watt s
Finals tubes: 4 x 845
Pre-drivers tubes: 2 x ECC82
Drivers tubes: 2 x 5687WB
Input impedence 100K OHM
Inputs: 4 x Line + 1 Direct
Out put transformer: MASTERSOUND
Load impedence: 4 – 8 Ohm
Negative feedback: 0 dB
Volume: remote control
Bandwidth: 8 Hz / 30 kHz – 0dB
Dimensions: 64 x 26 x 40 cm.
Weight: 50 Kg.
I don't believe these are sufficient enough to know how this amp will sound, do you? As far as the CarderSound speakers, yes one can obtain specs from Fostex on the drivers but, CarderSound provides no specs on the Madison itself! So once again I ask, how is Kristian coming to his conclusion? Now as far as how my system sounds if my statements were based solely on my opinions of it I'd agree with your statement that claims that rely on my own word as proof, comes perilously close maybe even supports, RBNG's assertion that the best proof a subjectivist can come up with when asked for supporting evidence is , "I know what I hear, and i can't be wrong..." but, as I've had numerous people over whose opinions I respect ---{ Clark Johnson being one of them }--- who have came to the same conclusion I have. Which is while not perfect ---{ and no system is }--- basically what goes in is what comes out or the system is quite faithful at replicating what's on the media being played.
Granted the highs are somewhat limited @ 16-17Khz ---{ I have two pairs of large HEILS, a pair of TAD 2001 and a pair of RCA MI-11419 to play with should I desire to }--- but in all honesty I usually don't feel I'm missing anything in the highs. However with some recordings I'd like a tad more extension in the highs. The bass probably only goes to 30-35Hz however, I can add subs and probably will someday in the future. I've been talking with some people here about that very thing in private emails. Yes, if I push the system too hard the sound falls apart but, for that to occur I have to push it to volume levels I'm not comfortable listening at ---{ I cherish my hearing too much }--- so it's really a non-issue for me.
That said, the frequencies ---{ 30-35Hz to 16-17KHz }--- that are covered sound better to me than any speaker I've ever heard, certainly better than the Aliantes did. If readers here remember I came into a $15K settlement and could have purchased any speakers in that ballpark I wanted to. I chose to purchase the CarderSound Madisons. Perhaps someday I'll slap a nice cap on a pair of one of those tweeters I mentioned above and for sure I'll be adding subs in the future but, for now I've never, ever been happier with how my system sounds and I feel no "need" at this present time to improve on what I'm hearing!
