RE: So, like I've asked you before . . .

"Why would a piano be easier than a violin?"

Less high frequency content than a violin. Fixed location in the room, so that microphone placement can be adjusted to tune desired response.

As a percussive instrument, the piano has a higher peak to average ratio and so requires more headroom than a violin. However, my system had sufficient power output that clipping was not approached. If the piano is played at painfully loud levels it is still a few db below the output capacity of my system.

The recording I made used 2T 7.5 tape. There was some audible hiss when using realistic playback levels, but only when the refrigerator (in the open plan kitchen / dining room / living room) was turned off. Experience shows that this is not a good idea, due to the risk of forgetting to turn it back on. (Happened once, didn't dare risk it twice or I would lose my pianist.)

The piano was a B model (one size smaller than a concert grand). The music did not use the bottom few notes of the piano. In general, the bottom three or four notes of the piano could not be accurately reproduced with the equipment used. However, the music didn't use these notes.

I made one other test recording of a piece for violin and piano. I didn't care for the violinist so I never carried this too far. I was never able to get satisfactory reproduction of the violin in the few trials that I did make. (I suspect the microphones were not well suited for recording the violin.)
