Warning to LFOs: Caution! Anecdotal Evidence!

I was shopping with a non-audiophile friend one day and we happened upon a record store where I found and purchased a CD of "Getz/Gilberto". I had never heard this CD before. I had been given an LP of it by another friend and the LP was very badly scratched. I figured it was time to give a demonstration of CD vs. LP to my friend, who had never heard my stereo.

First we put on the CD. My friend was amazed at how good it sounded, as he had never heard a high-end system. Then I pulled the LP out of its cardboard box. There was no inner liner. I warned him that the LP would have much surface noise. It took less then ten seconds of Gilberto singing before my friend's jaw dropped. "Oh. The CD sounded very good. The LP has a lot of surface noise, but her voice sounds much more real."

The reality of it is that neither version of this recording came close to achieving perfect sound. Perhaps the LP would have, if it had not been so badly abused. Perhaps the CD would have, if it had been made at a higher sample rate.
