RE: So, like I've asked you before . . .

Funny you should mention that. I did several about 3 years ago. In fact I had the musician playing right between my Acoustats and I put the microphones at the listening position using a Blumlein configuration direct onto R2R analog tape. The musician then proceeded to play the 24 Paganini Caprices on a Stradivarius violin (I am NOT making this up). Upon playback the sound is very close to what was heard live except a bit drier, which I attribute to the fact that the sound of the room is now being heard both on the recording and in the room again. Dynamics, and instrument tone were very much like heard live.

Flash forward three years. I listened again to this recording (it is on top of the line Quantegy master tape) the other night and its semblance to live unamplified solo violin left me captivated again.

Of course this is a test you can do yourself, just get someone to play for you and record them (with good equipment of course) and position them between the speakers and the mics where you listen. VERY instructive.
