"How does one explain the fact that so often people who may have required kilowatts worth of SS amp power seem to be just as happy or even moreso with a sub 100watt tube amp?"

Maybe the low level crossover distortion in the SS amp drove them to play music at a high volume so that their natural ear distortion would tend to cover it up. Or maybe caused them to back away from the speakers. With the tube amp maybe they are listening in near field or are content to listen a lower volume because the sound is cleaner.

Someone who has made the switch might comment.
