I'm not going to argue that there is or isn't an audible difference...

but the main reason that we prefer to use the higher formats is that they give much greater flexibility without introducing digital artifacts into the music. This was always a problem with 16/44.1, when we wanted to add effects, compress or "nomalise" (chuckle. who mentioned sound wars), we constantly use to run out of free space, and the digital artifacts introduced could be horrendous. There was basically not enough room for digital manipulations

for example... those who now use digital 24/96 or 24/192 DEQX's etc.. would know that this is only really possible at those sort of sample rates... in as much as these machine upsample before they start applying filters etc
