RE: Tweaks

In engineering parlance, at least in my experience, a "tweak" means a fine adjustment to a system that is overtly functioning. Typically, and I suppose more so in the pre-computer days, the design phase would have been impossible to conclude without thoughtfully ignoring as many factors as possible. The components were usually weakly specified and you had to be very careful and have lots of faith to get near three digits with your sliderule.

Now we can get closer, but that just raises the bar, it doesn't eliminate it. At some point you've got to look at the system as a system, not as a conglomeration of components and topology, assess it's performance and if it's found lacking try to tune and tweak it to play well, hopefully without significant redesign. All of your strays and tolerance build-ups have now come home to roost.

Therefore I submit that what defines a tweak is when it occurs, not what it involves. I appreciate your attempt to isolate "tweaks" from "design" for speakers, but it's tough as they are a continuum performance-wise.

How's this: "A tweak is a post-production optimization of an individual system".

Regards, Rick
