RE: 3 channels worked well

"A couple of years ago I happened to hook up my older DVD player to an unused input on my DAC and discovered that some CD's sounded a lot better playing through it than through my normal transport, especially the Mercury's."

Assuming the same bits were getting to the DAC, it might be that there was too much jitter in your regular transport. This could be caused by many factors, including possibly age related deterioration of components.

Some people on the computer audio asylum swear that they get great results using PCs as a transport. This has been my experience, too, but it was an unexpected benefit of using a computer for audio. My initial entry came from the need to archive and remaster old analog recordings. Then I discovered that it was convenient to rip and store my CDs. Then I discovered that the sound could be quite good, despite inexpensive equipment. Then I discovered the various software tweaks that can be endlessly time consuming, albeit affordable and often frustrating.

"I wasn't a Dolby fan preferring the tape hiss to the compression artifacts. I also recognize that a fair amount of both studio and reproduction gear was not well implemented due to an incomplete understanding of the factors that affect the sound and that we are not totally out of that ditch yet."

Me too. Dolby was the first and enabling step toward processing to "improve" sound quality. As technology has advanced, processing has too: now we have digital pitch correction and loudness wars. There are (a few) people producing and buying records who know better.
