Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

Many even pre-stereo.

So why not blame the second channel? Or the wiring? Or the capacitors? Or even the real culprit (in my book): Overproduction.

I think the key to satisfying sound is to minimize the microphones, mixing and messing about with the signal. I was enjoying an old mono recording (~1951) of Carmen (via CD) just hours ago and commented to my wife about how alive the old stuff sounds. Interestingly enough when I listen to recent live digital recordings made with just a few Mic's and a recorder, they sound alive also. I'm convinced that the more a record is "produced" the deader it gets whatever the medium or technology.
