In Reply to: Good point ... and "ersatz spaciness" is a phrase that would describe how dipole speakers often sound to me posted by Richard BassNut Greene on March 14, 2008 at 09:44:02:
What piston source dipoles have you heard? Where?
To optimize the sound quality of the human voice, my favorite instrument, I chose an EPOS speaker whose 6" bass-mid driver plays full range with no crossover at all. It's assisted by a dome tweeter with a one-cap high-pass filter at 5500Hz.
A soft, flexing cone driver in "controlled" wideband Q breakup with narrowing directivity? Going to 180 deg dispersion near 5500hz? Gracious. Does your hearing roll off above 2k? How close to you sit to them, or is your room anechoic? Have you ever done a distortion sweep? How does the phase vs frequency output track the input? At various angles?
While I've preferred building and buying speakers with simple first-order filters since the late 1960's, I've found that having no filters at all in the 80 to 3000Hz. range is an additional advantage.
I have found that it is the electro-acoustic slope that matters, not just the electrical filter. I have also found that I am more sensitive to amplitude and intermodulation rather than phase distortion. Though I do still pay attention to phase. Not to mention power response and the reverberant field. Then again I was born in the late 60's.
I look forward to the day when I can buy good single driver full-range speakers and eliminate those pesky crossovers once and for all.
You can. They're called headphones. Unfortunately, their acoustic output is woefully inadequate when removed from your head and placed several feet away in the room.
cheers,
AJ
