Technical and scientific discussion of amps, cables and other topics.

What would you think these speakers cost?

Yes, fairly flat response can be bought at $650, but this aberration retails at $19,000!!! Why's that??? Shouldn't it be better than the cheaper speaker?

Given the fact that in-ear response of individuals may very quite substantially, I agree that some listeners are more sensitive to some phenomena than others:

Shaw (1965), “Earcanal pressure generated by a free sound field”, J. of Acoust. Soc. of America, vol. 39, no.3, p.465
Møller et al. (1995), “Head-related transfer functions of human subjects”, J. of Audio Eng. Soc., p.300

But, did you ever make a test where the only parameter that was changed was phase or time alignment? If not, how would you know that phase issues are important?

As for the overhead reflectors, what you describe doesn't surprise me given the fact that under some circumstances the reflection from such reflectors can be stronger than the direct sound:

Halmrast (2000), “Orchestral timbre: comb-filter coloration from reflections”, J. of Sound and Vibration, vol.232, no.1, p.53

A further reason may be that the reflections from the reflectors come that late that the precedence effect no longer works, you would perceive the reflector as separate sound source which makes localisation easy:

Blauert (1980), “Auditory backward inhibition in concert halls”, J. of Audio Eng. Soc., p.718
Litovsky et al. (1999), “The precedence effect”, J. of Acoust. Soc. of America, vol. 106, p.1633
