RE: get a bass guitar in the room and go up and down the scale

Re: subjective loudness

Of course, but mikes don't measure subjectively, they measure plain SPL. Unless you apply A-weighting or similar and consider perception thresholds, such data don't reveal much.

Re: some notes will be too soft

Dips seem to be less audible and hence less disturbing (cf. Bücklein,
Olive, Toole).

Re: If a kick drum excites a room resonance

Either there is a fabulous mismatch in my room or it's not a problem at all, I never had any resonance issues with rock music. So far I could detect only one standing wave when playing music, it's with a track from Camel album "Stationary traveller". Call it coincidence, the track is called "Pressure points".

Re: RT60 is meaningless in small rooms

RT60, RT30, RT20, whatever, RT as parameter is meaningless in small rooms altogether. The sound field in small rooms is highly directional and diffuse sound field concepts do not apply:

Gover et al., “Measurements of directional properties of reverberant sound fields in rooms using a spherical microphone array”, J. of Acoust. Soc. of America 2004, vol. 116, no. 4, pt.1, p.2138
Toole (2006), “Loudspeakers and rooms for sound reproduction – a scientific review”, J. of the Audio Engineering Society, p.451
