Subjective listening tests of Toole and Klippel have shown that it is indeed frequency response that is the most important parameter. ± 2 dB can be purchased for as little as about $650/pair. According to Toole "the law of diminishing returns comes into play at $1800 per pair, and you can do well at $700 per pair if you're willing to sacrifice some bass".



This is the impulse response of my speakers with the digital filters set to linear phase LLL. When setting to minimum phase MMM or mixed phase LMM, the response is what one normally obtains from hifi speakers. The differences between both settings are extremely subtle: I do not hear any change in timbre, with some selected tracks there is a very slight change in soundstage. Nothing to really worry about.
