Audibility of room modes...

depends on amplitude, Q, signal type (steady state or impulsive), reverberation time (audibility increases with lower RT60):

It would appear though that the cue for detection is modal decay:

I'm skeptical re:conclusions that can be drawn from simple room response measurements.
