Single instruments (except for piano), are not so difficult for speakers to replicate.
That is why there are many demonstrations done with 'real' performers behind curtains to 'prove' how real the speakers are.
Where the image begins to collapse, is when more and more instruments are added with ever greater crescendos, or when the gutteral 'thwack' of a real bass drum at close quarters is tried to be replicated by bookshelf monitors?
To that extent I feel it is also a basic limitation in the state of electronics delivering both the power and speed of the real thing WITHOUT DISTORTION.
