Re: If Romex is so good,...

First of all, I never said Romex was a good choice for audio cables, I just said that it was an excellent chice for the purpose it is specified for in the places it is approved. There are better choices for other applications such as speaker cable...like as THHN.

As for smelting and reusing copper, what's wrong with that? My first job out of school was in the largest steel plant in the world. Practically ALL the steel made included some resmelted scrap. The purity and accuracy of the alloying elements was so great every heat of steel in the Basic oxygen furnace was measured in a mass spectrometer by analyzing the light from an arc drawn from it and analyzed by a computer to determine how much more was needed to meet the specifications to complete that order. All impurities were removed in the slag. Learn some of the chemical aspects of metalurgy and the metalurgical aspects of materials as well and you will understand why resmelted copper or any other metal can be every bit as pure as copper smelted from ore directly out of a mine.

I have no idea what kind of materials are used in radiation resistance instrument cables, it's not my specialty and I never had any reason to find out. But if I had to take a wild ass guess, I'd bet somewhere in the insulation you'd find lead, but that's just a guess.
