I imagine that you're right about the 'natural' dynamics. Also they were mono which I think is inherently better in some ways.

As far as S/N, tape is different. It's noise is more stochastic than 78's which have sort of a scraping sound so I don't think you can hear into them in the same fashion. If you don't buy my notion that it was due to the performance could I sell you on a combination of higher velocity coupled with orders of magnitude more actual energy available from the motor via the medium requiring far less electronic power gain, in some cases, none beyond an acoustic impedance matching device?

While I still have a few records, I've nothing that plays them. Every medium has it's tradeoffs and probably my favorite was 7.5 ips tape. But at their best most could sound pretty good. Now of course it's digital which solves so many problems it's magic. You know, I bet I can throw away my old tape splicer...
