"They fully capture the aliveness of that medium. I think that attribute was a result of it's limitations rather than it's strengths."
??? Sorry that simply doesn't make any sense. The aliveness that is there is more likely due to the lack of limiting and/or compressor usage. I am sure the peaks are heavily distorted as a result and the soft end is burdened with lots of surface noise but the range is in there and I think its in part because we can hear BELOW the noise floor of the medium. There are correlated sounds of the music that are heard and are quieter than the constant noise from these old records. S/N ratio is limited because it is measured from the peak to the noise floor. But what if you can hear 10 or even 20db below that noise floor signal that is correlated with the music??
For sure this can be done with analog tape, where sometimes the hiss is quite loud and yet softer sounds than that hiss can easily be heard in the mix. In this case the MEASURED S/N ratio is not the same as the audible dynamic range.
