"There are two dimensions here: musical quality and reproduction quality. Some people are capable of perceiving these dimensions separately and evaluating an experience according to each dimension. Some lack this ability.

A variety of musical qualities/attributes are what determines the potential for sound quality.

A variety of factors fiqure into the reproduction equation. The system from gear to room is far and away the most important aspect.

Recording quality has nothing to do with the potential for sound quality (save for format limitations) and is only a minor player in the overall reproduction chain. I can't think of any factor in either or these chains being less important than recording quality.
