Maybe recording engineers of the day had not yet discovered how to destroy recordings with excessive compression and misuse of other effects.

Many said it was the CD that was to blame when music on the first CDs didn't sound good. Maybe low-bitdepth digital audio workstations and people new to the technology was the culprit, not CD playback in and of itself.
