"On the other hand an especially well recorded performance will often allow me to enjoy and somewhat understand a work or genre that doesn't normally appeal.
"
Exactly, it allows for a broadened music pallete. Even more so live concerts that are either unamplified in good venues or well produced (ie. a sound engineer manning the controls) of music you are not normally so keen on recorded can be an ear opener as well.
"All that being said I've enjoyed music heard on about every ilk of medium and system since hand-cranked 78 players. Actually before that, the ones that played the real thick records. "
Funny enough, the sound quality is not always bad with those old 78s. Sometimes what they lack in bandwidth and noise is made up for with startlingly lifelike dynamics. Not a small issue in today's over compressed music world.
The funny thing about videophiles is there really isn't much to discuss. You look at the picture and say, "Yup, that looks better" and pretty much everyone agrees because it is much more obvious to our visiocentric species.
