Yours too.
I don't know that I need 'fidelity', but I do need freedom from distortions that have such an adverse affect upon my feeble psyche that I just want to turn the damn thing off no matter what's playing. On the other hand an especially well recorded performance will often allow me to enjoy and somewhat understand a work or genre that doesn't normally appeal.
Sooooo I'm against the notion that sound quality is just a fillip and not important to the enjoyment of music. It's hard to imagine anyone frequenting this forum who feels that way, why bother? Perhaps that is true for many people and that's cool, but I think by definition it ain't true for 'audiophiles'. My working definition of 'audiophile' is a person unusually sensitive to nuances in sound reproduction. The unusually is important, we aren't normal. Just ask your family.
All that being said I've enjoyed music heard on about every ilk of medium and system since hand-cranked 78 players. Actually before that, the ones that played the real thick records. It isn't the level of distortions that seem to matter, it's the nature of the beasts and how they interact with my ears and brain. From what I've seen it isn't normally a matter of hearing or not hearing whatever factor is in play, it's mostly an issue of whether you care.
Visually the same things occur but I'm on the other side of the fence. I've done a lot of color and black and white printing in the chemical era and now do similar stuff with photoshop. I used to share a lab with video guys and was a guinea pig for one them who concluded that I was in the top 1% or so of the population when it came to seeing problems due to group delay. All that is to support my claim that I see well. So, I can see video problems easily, but by and large, I don't care. When I go to a theater the picture, if it's in focus, is always so good that I don't notice it. But the sound, oh the sound... THX has certainly made the sound of theaters more consistent, they all sound like shit. And way too much of it, I can't stand it without earplugs.
Rick
