Don,Who's attempting to justify bad sound coming from their system? I believe you're making a stawman argument about a "supposed" recording quality myth that doesn't exist for anyone except you! I've tried to explain this to you a few times before and I'll try one last time. I hope you'll actually read this with an open mind instead of simply discarding what I'm about to say. If you'd just use "live, unamplified music" as opposed to just "good sound" as your Reference Standard when assembling your audio system you'd save yourself a lot of heartache. From what I've seen you posting these last few days I think you have two "problem" areas.
First somehow you've gotten the idea that using "live, unamplified music" as a Reference Standard is restricted to just using the recording of symphonies and classical music. Nothing could be further from the truth! Using live, unamplified, music as a Reference Standard isn't restricted to, nor does it require the usage of a symphony or classical music. Nowhere does it preclude using rock, jazz or other types of music as your Reference Standard. It does however, mean the rock, folk, jazz etc. group MUST perform "unplugged" or strictly acoustical with no instrument or singer being amplified, when recording. That's the reason why symphonies and classical music are what usually comes to mind whenever someone mentions "live, unamplified music" i.e., they're recorded unamplified, period. It's not because they're a symphoney or the music is classical.
Second we have to determine what "bad sound" is. Unfortunately without a definition we all recognise and agree on we can be arguing this issue forever without resolving anything. Don until you define what constitutes "bad sound", a debate/arguement/discussion simply cannot be had, because we might all have a different idea as to what constitutes "bad sound" on an audio system. For Example: Whenever I hear rap or hip hop I'll usually say "That sounds horrible!" I'm not talking about the recording quality ---{ although that may be horrible as well }--- I'm talking about the "music" it's all noise to me and I just cannot get past that. Rap and Hip hop sounds horrible to me. Is it something that immediately "sounds bad" because of the music, not bcause of the performance or recording quality. Regardless of the quality of the audio system it's played on or the quality of the recording, rap and hip hop "sounds bad" to me. I'm unable to even get to the point where I can determine if the performance or recording quality is horrible or not! So in this case does BAD SOUND = BAD STEREO?
Now after telling you that I can also tell you at the very same time I have a terrible ---{ at least in terms of recording quality }--- recording of a performance called " Night On Bald Mountain" by the rock group Fireballet. I enjoy listening to this CD immensely! Yes, even though I'm fully aware of it's quite severe limitations as a recording, the performance and music sound great to me. Yes, even though the recording quality is quite terrible ---{ this recording sounds as if someone made a recording a cassette ( that was itself poorly recorded --Thanks Tony! ) and then put that recording on a CD } I should mention that I previously owned the original LP many years ago and I still remember how good it was. Who knows maybe my brain's making the CD sound better than it really does because of that? To be completely honest with you Don, I can completely understand how someone who hasn't heard the original LP upon hearing this CD wouldn't like the band, the music or the performance and immediately say it "sounds bad". I wonder which of us is correct? Does this CD 'sound bad" or not? Don, I think you have to define exactly what "bad sound" is first before we can all have an intelligent discussion on this topic.
