"I'm admittedly a poor excuse for an audiophile"Why would you think that? It's unfortunate that those of us whose purpose is to enjoy music through our systems are forced to feel that way. I don't think you or I should consider ourselves any less of an audiophile than those who seem to think "bad sound" is a function of having a good audio system.
Some of the same people who claim to be "subjectivists" and rally most strongly against claims made by those they label as "objectivists" are the ones holding this recording quality myth most closely in their way of thinking. The fact is compression and limited frequency response are objective performance measures - when it furthers their purpose, ie. promotes their purpose of promoting their own greater taste and sophistication it's ok to be objective. Otherwise in other cases they want to hold out that science is flawed or incomplete when it comes to supporting their beliefs.
The only reason I would deny that I'm an audiophile is because of embarrassment. I'm embarrassed to be associated with such silly philosophical ramblings that only seems to exist in order to justify the purchasing of equipment that sounds bad.
Sure fine recordings are a pleasure but certainly I don't want to have that as requirement for good sound coming out of my system. I don't understand why anyone would make that compromise.
BTW - I probably had a 100 disks when I upgraded from the plastic system I had been given by my parents when I lived at home in the late 70s. Though I've been a record collector since the late 60s I didn't read my first audio magazine until the early 80s. I gave the magazines up about 5 years ago and think it's the best thing I could have done to further my enjoyment of this hobby.
