Without a definition of "resolution" this thread is meaningless

Without an agreed upon definition of resolution , talking about bits of resolution is meaningless. Without specifying a bandwidth (possibly weighted within that bandwidth) talking about signal to noise ratio is also meaningless. Most of this thread consists of people talking across each other, using words with different meanings—in some cases words that don't have any consistent meaning.

There are known trade offs that relate number of bits used to encode a PCM sample, sampling rate, and signal to noise ratio over a given bandwidth. These follow theoretical limits defined by Shannon's information theory and were shown to be implementable in the context of digital audio by Michael Gerzon and Peter Craven back in 1989. This theory is the basis for most implementations of 24 bit PCM converters as well as 1 bit DSD converters, both ADCs and DACs.
