When was this established as fact? I'm no metalurgist so I don't know for sure what occurs at a molecular level during machining. What is your evidence?

I would say that with a big and hard enough hammer anything will break. Whether it is metal molecules of some sort or vinyl molecules. Modern chemistry tells us it is merely a matter of supplying the energy necessary to liberate the shared electrons.
