RE: "Bits of resolution"

"It doesn't, it has a fairly well defined SNR i.e. resolution.

To be clear I should have said analog has infinite resolution within the limts of it's SNR.

We are talking about resolution not signal to noise ratio. A 10 bit bus would allow for 1024 distinct voltage levels. There are no distinct voltage levels with an analog waverform. Of course in the digital world we smooth the digital results when converting to analog - but all levels occuring between the distinct levels are lost.

The SNR is limited by the number of digital bits but the resolution is defined by the distinct levels between the bits. There is no such inner distinction when it comes to an analog waveform.
