And that is why mankind invented engineering and measurements.
ABX and such can establish the relationships between hearing and output artifacts. Test equipment can be used to measure the the relationships between a device's output artifacts and stimuli. They can also establish the condition of the environment. Then you can work on the emissions and susceptibilities of each component to fix the problems to some arbitrary degree.
RFI seems to be the current audiophile GOD. A three letter word that is used to explain everything yet means nothing. At the least we should get up to date and use the newer three letter term for the same state: EMC. Electromagnetic compatibility.
RFI implies a sensitivity to radiated energy, especially that which is deliberately generated. For instance if I start hearing preaching coming from my speakers that's a pretty good indication that I'm having an RFI problem due to the AM station a mile away. EMC covers all frequencies, sources and coupling mechanisms and so is a much better term for abject ignorance.
For what it's worth, the first thing professionals do to tackle these problems is start clamping Z-beads all over the place and see if they change the results. Some folks think they are evil and indeed they don't necessarily have to be used for the final solution (but are often part of it) however they are an excellent way to get started. And you don't need a spectrum analyzer and chamber, just your brain and ears will do the trick.
